A remarkable canned mackerel that impresses across the board: firm, light flesh that is vaguely reminiscent of tuna, but tastes even finer. The whole thing in mild, cold-pressed olive oil with the flesh of real ripe tomatoes and chili peppers. Small mackerel, processed like sardines.

The Conserveira "Pinhais" is a family business that was founded in 1920 in the small fishing village of Matosinhos near Porto. Today, almost 100 years later, the company is still family-owned under the leadership of Dr. Antonio Pinhal and is one of the most renowned canned fish manufacturers in the country.
True to the company motto "quality over quantity", Pinhais & Co. Ltd. still worked using traditional methods, with very little done by machines and most of the work done by hand, which is a rarity today. The olive oil is of very good quality as the Pinhais have their own olive grove in Trás-os-Montes.

Makrelen-Konserven werden häufig mit noch größerer Sorgfalt hergestellt als z.B. Sardinen-Konserven, bei denen die Fische im Ganzen eingelegt werden: die Makrele hingegen wird zunächst sorgfältig von Hand filettiert und ausgenommen. So enthalten unsere Makrelen-Konserven keinerlei Gräten, Schuppen oder Köpfe und sind gerade für Einsteiger eine gute Wahl.

Die Makrele ist ein „Zugfisch“, der in großen Schwärmen unterwegs ist. Im Winter hält sich die Makrele im tiefen Gewässer auf, im Frühling zieht sie in Küstennähe, da sie dort mehr Nahrung findet. Gefischt wird sie zwischen Mitte Januar und Mitte März.

Die Makrele enthält viele wertvolle Nährstoffe wie Omega-3-Fettsäuren, Vitamin A, B und D, Magnesium, Selenium Eisen und Jod.
